This message is to the gal trying to get the courage to ride again with the bad back.
The love for horses that we share is a very strong bond that will never go away. I have degenerative disk disease, 3 bulging discs, arthritis in my lower back and legs. I can’t sleep in any other position except for on my back and with a heating pad. You would think that would stop me, but it doesn’t.
I ride dressage every day. However, in your case, you need to ride a gaited horse. They are the next best solution aside from not riding in the first place. Gaited horses have a smooth gait rather than a bumpy gait. It’s like the difference between driving a Mercedes Benz versus a 4 wheel drive truck.
Also do pilates

I hit the post comment button by mistake.
Anyways, Pilates strengthens your core. Plus go to one of the best acupuncturists that you can afford.
My horse is not gaited, but one of the gals I ride with has a gaited horse. Let me tell you how nice that horse is to ride. OMG! I won’t sell my boy because of my problem. He is not a commodity to me. He is family. However, if I did buy a 2nd horse or if something happened to my boy, I would buy a gaited horse.
No doctor/orthopedic surgeon will ever approve of sports in general for folks like you and me. However, we all know non-horse owners and riders will never understand that bond.
Last but not least, one of the best natural horse trainers in the world who will not get on a horse until he knows he’s safe is Pat Pirelli. My horse is one of the sweetest boys and well behaved because of his program.
Good luck.
